Pearl Jewelry - The Story of Pearl Hunters
[12/11/2010 7:10 am]
As long as pearl jewelry have been known to people, they have been a highly sought commodity for their beauty. It's only in recent times however that the industry has taken the hunt for the perfect pearl to a whole different level. Today, the shiny orbs that we see on in display in jewelry stores have actually almost always been grown in farms.

That's a far cry from the dangerous extraction and collection methods used before the invention of modern technology. In the past, not more than 100 years ago, the only way to retrieve pearls was by diving in lakes, floods and the ocean to pick them up, one at the time. The unfortunate divers who'se job it was to do this, were often poor and lured by the relative large sums they could get. The diver would sometimes have to dive as deep as 100 feet on one single breath of air. In order to preserve air and to stay submerged the longest, the divers would hold on to heavy stones on the way down.

Naturally, this dangerous activity was reserved for the desperate or the powerless - in many cases slaves or extremely poor peasents. Today, this method is all but obsolete in most places of the world. The cheaper cultured pearls have become popular and are many times the only pearls available to the consumer.

There are however still a few isolated areas that practice this old art of pearl diving. Some of the finest natural pearl speciments come from the gulf of Bahrain. Here, divers still risk their health to retrieve what are considered the top of the crop in the world. In fact, Bahrain wants no part of the sale of cultured pearls, banned from trade. Bahrain is one of the few places on earth that does an active job in trying to preserve the natural habitat and waters from pollution.

It's an interesting story and one that continues to fascinate buyers around the world. Somehow, the beauty of the pearl grows when it's been retrieved from the depth of the ocean.

Buying Pearl Jewelry Without Being Ripped Off
[12/11/2010 7:07 am]
Buying pearl jewelry can be fun, exciting and confusing. Whether you're considering a gift of pearl jewelry for someone special or as a treat for yourself, take some time to learn the terms used in the industry. Here's some information to help you get the best quality pearl jewelry for your money, whether you're shopping in a traditional brick and mortar store or online.

Pearls

Natural or real pearls are made by oysters and other mollusks. Cultured pearls also are grown by mollusks, but with human intervention; that is, an irritant introduced into the shells causes a pearl to grow. Imitation pearls are man-made with glass, plastic, or organic materials.

Because natural pearls are very rare, most pearls used in jewelry are either cultured or imitation pearls. Cultured pearls, because they are made by oysters or mollusks, usually are more expensive than imitation pears. A cultured pearl's value is largely based on its size, usually stated in millimeters, and the quality of its nacre coating, which give it luster. Jewelers should tell your if the pearls are cultured or imitation. Some black, bronze, gold, purple, blue and orange pearls, whether natural or cultured, occur that way in nature; some, however, are dyed through various processes. Jewelers should tell you whether the colored pearls are naturally colored, dyed or irradiated.

Clams, oysters, mussels and many other mollusks with limy shells are known to produce pearls. But very few kinds yield gem pearls of jeweler's quality. The pearl is an abnormal growth of mother-of-pearl, or nacre, imbedded in the soft bodies of these shellfish. It is built up, layer upon layer, in the same way as nacre is added to the lining of the growing shell and always has the same color and luster. For example, over the country, hundreds of good-sized pearls are found each year in the oysters we eat. Unfortunately these have no commercial value regardless of whether they have been cooked or not because they are dull opaque white or purple like the shell of the parent oyster. In recent times almost all pearls of gem quality come from the oriental pearl oyster which has a bright shimmering translucent nacre.

A pearl starts growing when some irritating foreign substance such as a sand grain, bit of mud, parasite or other object becomes lodged in the shell-producing gland called the mantle. Pearls formed in the soft flesh where nacre can be added on all sides are most likely to be spherical and the most highly prized. By far the great majority are flattened or variously distorted and have little value. Size, color, luster and freedom from flaws are other essential qualities. Unlike other gems, such as diamonds, pearls have an average life of only about 50 years. In time the small amount of water in a pearl's make-up is lost and its surface cracks. Because they are mostly lime, necklaces which are worn often are injured by the acid secretions of the human skin.

When a diamond is being judged on a quality level, the one doing the judging usually follows the 4 C's table. The 4 C's are cut, color, clarity and carat. With regard to the clarity of the gemstone, this is the one factor which dictates whether there are any visible features included within the diamond. In general, a stone which has a wonderful clarity aspect surrounding it is going to look nicer than one which does not have this trait. Clarity is judged on a pearl strand scale ranging all the way from FL, which is flawless, to I3 which is an imperfect diamond. Somewhere close to the flawless part of the scale is the SI2 rating and many have wondered if a flawless diamond is always better or ever better than that of an SI2 stone.

Is a Flawless Stone The Best When Compared With an SI2?

Before answering the question concerning whether a flawless diamond is always better than an SI2 version, it is important to describe both types of stones briefly. A flawless gemstone is one which does not have any visible imperfections when viewed under a 10-power magnification by someone trained in the business. An SI2 on pearl earrings the other hand is a gem which looks clear of any imperfections when viewed without magnification but inclusions can be seen when viewed under 10-power magnification by someone knowledgeable in the jewelry trade. Therefore, if one was wondering which one was best by technical terms, the flawless gemstone would be the one. However, this is not the final and definitive answer which one should take away from this information.

Are Flawless Gems the Best Ones for Consumers As Opposed to the SI2?

Although in theory flawless diamonds reign supreme over SI2 ones, this is not to say that flawless stones are the best ones for consumers to choose when buying this type of jewelry. Since the inclusions in SI2 diamonds can only be seen by a trained professional using 10-power magnification, it would seem reasonable to assume that purchasing this type of diamond might be the best choice after all when compared to buying a flawless diamond. Due to the fact that wearers of pearl necklace these gemstones will rarely have friends, family members and complete strangers approach them with tools of magnification to look at their diamonds, it may seem perfectly clear that buying an SI2 stone would be the better choice for purchasers to make.

Reasons to Buy SI2 Gemstones Over Flawless Ones

There are quite a few reasons why buying SI2 diamonds as opposed to flawless ones might be the best bet for prospective gem purchasers. One of the more important reasons for buying an SI2 stone and not a flawless one is that nobody on the street will be able to tell if your stone is flawless or SI2. Since the inclusions in freshwater pearl jewelry an SI2 can only be seen under strong magnification by those in the jewelry business, a diamond of this variety will appear just as beautiful as a flawless one.

Secondly, by purchasing an SI2 and not a flawless type of stone, the buyer is saving themselves a great deal of money and time in the long run. Flawless diamonds are much harder to come by than SI2 stones. In addition, should a purchaser find a cultured pearl jewelry flawless one that they wish to buy, the price that they are going to pay for the item will be quite steep. If one wants to buy a stone which is going to look fabulous on them and not spend a fortune while doing so, then the SI2 purchase might just yield the best gem in the end.

It seems like the only time that anyone dresses up any more is to attend a wedding. For some people, unaccustomed to special occasion dressing, that invitation in the mailbox is a cause for anxiety. Whether you are a clotheshorse or you consider shopping to be the worst form of torture, here are some tips on how to twisted pearl necklace dress for different types of weddings.

Your first clue about attire is the time of day the ceremony will be held. Your second is the location (especially if it is a destination wedding). A good rule of thumb is that you should dress more formally for an evening wedding than you would for an afternoon service, and more casually for a beach wedding than for one held in a city.

If the wedding is to be held in the freshwater pearl jewelry afternoon, a female guest should plan on wearing a pretty day dress or possibly a skirt with a special top (The choice may depend in part on what is in style that season. I remember looking for a dress to wear to an autumn wedding one year, only to discover that absolutely no stores were carrying dresses that season. I ended up wearing a below-the-knee velvet skirt with a silk twinset - not my first choice, but it worked.) A hat is optional, but certainly lovely. If you wear a hat, I guarantee that at least three other female guests will tell you that they wish that they had been daring enough to wear one - isn't it funny how something once deemed mandatory is now reserved for the brave few? For freshwater pearl gentlemen, a classic business suit is easy and always appropriate. Depending on the venue, a handsome navy blazer with khaki trousers is another good option, particularly for an outdoor wedding.

Evening weddings deserve an outfit with more pizzaz. If the invitation says "black tie", then at least you don't have to wonder about what to wear. The men wear black tie (obviously), and the pearl earrings women wear either a long gown or a very fancy short cocktail dress. Accessories are key for a formal evening affair, so by all means, wear some really smashing wedding jewelry. Elegant choices for wedding jewelry would include Swarovski crystal tassel earrings with a stack of bracelets, or a spectacular pearl drop necklace. Sometimes one of the most fun parts of attending a black tie wedding is checking out the jewelry on the other guests!

If you are unlucky enough to receive an invitation stating "black tie optional", don't panic. All that it really means is that the bride and groom would like for the guests to wear black tie, but are afraid to require it. Just wear black tie. You will make the bride very happy. For an evening wedding that is not black tie, the wholesale pearl jewelry men should wear dark suits, and the ladies should wear a dressy (but not long) cocktail dress. Because it is the evening, you should still dress to kill. And please, choose a color other than black for your dress - it is so depressing to be surrounded by a sea of black dresses at a wedding, even one held after 6 pm.

Very rarely seen is white tie, which is the most formal type of event. White tie affairs start at 8 pm or later, and only take place in the winter. Men can rent the appropriate items, since they are unlikely to keep anything so formal on hand. For the ladies, this is the time to go all out, since it very well may be your only opportunity. This means a full skirted floor length ballgown with long white gloves. And naturally, spectacular jewelry. Also, since white tie weddings are held in the winter, a fur stole would be a luxurious finishing touch. (If you are unsure about fur, wear a silk satin wrap instead.)

The guests at a wedding can contribute to the elegance of the affair. It is always worth it to take the time to select an outfit that suits the occasion and makes you look fantastic. (Not to mention that it is disrespectful to wear anything so outlandish that it draws attention away from the bride. That includes underdressing.) After all, it may be the bride's day, but a wedding is a great excuse for the guests to dress up and have a great time, too!

Your wedding is a momentous occasion that you will always want to remember. One nice memory is all of the guests who helped make your day special. A great way to keep a record of the people who helped you celebrate your marriage is with a guest book.

Traditionally, the guest book is an attractive small book with lines for the guests to sign their names. It is usually placed on a table near the entrance to the reception, so that all of freshwater pearl jewlelry the guests will have the opportunity to sign it. Placing a person in charge of the guest book (although in reality, they don't do much) is considered a way to give them a role of honor without having them in your wedding party. It's a perfect assignment for your grandmother or chatty aunt. Guest books are often sold as sets with matching pens.

If you will have a creative crowd attending your wedding, consider putting out a scrapbook instead of a lined guest book. This will encourage your guests to do more than sign their names. Supply a variety of colored markers and other materials so that your guests can really put a piece of themselves into the project. You are likely to cultured pearl end up with a lot of funny messages, good wishes, sweet quotations, and even a few pieces of original art!

Some couples like the idea of a momento, but prefer something other than the traditional guest book. One popular idea is to have a picture frame that your guests can autograph. After the wedding, the newlyweds will use it to frame their favorite wedding photo. This can be a nice idea if you want to keep the list of your guests out where you will see it on a daily basis.

There are other creative alternatives to a traditional guest book. Sometimes the bride and groom will put out small blank pieces of paper and pens. Have a framed note on akoya pearl the table requesting that your guests jot down their names and wishes for the bride and groom. The pieces of paper can then be dropped into a big vase or basket designated for that purpose. This is a great idea for a bride who enjoys scrapbooking, as she can later combine the notes with photos of the guests who wrote them to make a very special momento.

Speaking of photos, sometimes couples will set out a Polaroid camera and ask that the guests take pictures of themselves and each other in lieu of a regular guest book. Put out a couple of Sharpies so that the pictures can be "autographed" by the subjects. You could even set up a glamorous backdrop for the subjects to freshwater pearl stand in front of while being photographed. It would be a really cute idea for a Hollywood inspired wedding.

A wonderful idea is to set up a wishing tree. Take tree branches, and paint them a color that coordinates with your wedding scheme, such as white, silver, gold, or red. "Plant" the branches into a decorative container. Then dress it up by decorating the branches. A very elegant idea is to hang teardrop crystals from the wholesale pearl jewelry branches - it is a perfect complement if the bride is wearing crystal bridal jewelry. Even if the bride is wearing pearls instead of crystal bridal jewelry, the sparkle of the crystals on the wishing tree will add a special touch to the reception. Provide little notecards with ribbons on them for the guests to write a special wish to the newlyweds that they can hang on the wishing tree. Your guest will love this idea, and the tree can be reused in the future at Thanksgiving - have everyone hang a little note naming something for which they are thankful. What a meaningful tradition to start.

The friends and family members who attend your wedding will be a big part of what makes the day special. Remember your guests by choosing one of these variations of a guest book. Whether it is something that you see every day, or pull out on your anniversary each year, you will be glad to have something to help you remember who was there on your wedding day.
